Ambitious, Ross Corporation plans to expand to 3,600 stores Fer House

U.S. discount chain Ross announced Monday that it opened 24 new stores in 17 states in June and July, including 21 Ross stores and three DD's Discount discount stores.

“These recent openings reflect our ongoing plans to continue to build our presence in existing and new markets,” Richard Lietz, executive vice president of real estate development at Ross, said in a statement. “This summer, Ross expanded its footprint in several existing markets and added offices in Michigan, Minnesota and New York, where we entered last year, while DD's Discount expanded its presence in Colorado, Pennsylvania and Texas.”

Ross, which opened a total of 18 new stores in the first quarter, said it operated 1,795 Ross stores in 43 U.S. states, Washington, D.C., and Guam, and 353 DD's Discount stores in 22 states, for a total of 2,148 stores as of Monday.

Ross has said it wants to eventually expand its store footprint to more than 3,600 locations. During an earnings call in May, CEO Barbara Rentler said the company expects to open about 90 stores in total this year, including 75 Ross stores and 15 DD's Discounts stores.

Ross reported in May that first-quarter sales rose 8 percent year-over-year to $4.9 billion, up from $4.5 billion a year earlier. Same-store sales rose 3 percent in the first quarter compared with the same period a year earlier. Rentler said in a statement at the time that “as much as we would like to do better” first-quarter sales were in line with guidance, although macroeconomic headwinds continue to put pressure on our customers' discretionary spending.”

Sales at Ross's DD's Discount lagged behind those at Ross stores last fiscal year. In response, the company said in March that it plans to further increase the number of DD's Discount discount stores in existing markets in order to better provide customers with high-quality, in-season name-brand apparel and home décor.
